As Trump Administration Eyes Changes to Gold Butte, Community Leaders Demand Monument Be Kept Whole

Just one day after President Donald Trump traveled to Utah to sign two proclamations to drastically reduce Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke confirmed on a press call that he’s recommending some sort of reduction to Nevada’s Gold Butte National Monument. Ammon Bundy Released from Federal Custody, Placed Under House Arrest

For the first time since his extradition to Nevada, Ammon Bundy walked outside the Lloyd George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas this morning to greet family, supporters, and the media. Hours after Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke abruptly left Nevada, Southern Nevada elected officials and local public lands advocates gathered in Las Vegas to express their outrage. Zinke had promised two days worth of meetings with environmentalists, Native Americans, and elected leaders to discuss Gold Butte and Basin and Range National Monuments. Nevadans to Trump Administration: “Leave Our Monuments Alone”

U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is set to return to Nevada later this month, as the Trump Administration continues its review of 24 National Monuments. Mesquite City Council Sneaks in Anti-Gold Butte Resolution for Quick Approval

On the final Mesquite City Council meeting before the Fourth of July holiday, the council voted 4-1 to approve a controversial resolution endorsing a reduction in the size of Gold Butte National Monument. Despite objections from Mesquite Mayor Allan Litman, his colleagues voted on the resolution which had very little public vetting before yesterday's meeting. (more…)

Gold Butte Takes Center Stage Again in Mesquite

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hosted a public meeting in Mesquite last Thursday to provide local residents with information about the newly designated Gold Butte National Monument. A contingent of Bundy sympathizers tried to drown out dialogue. BLM representatives and Mesquite residents nonetheless engaged in that dialogue on how to move forward in protecting Gold Butte. (more…)
