Yesterday, two Nevada Legislature committees heard two critical health care bills. Not only will these bills protect women’s access to contraception regardless of what Congress does to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but they also aim to expand that access. These hearings kicked off Nevada Women’s Week, during which the Legislature will likely move forward several women’s rights bills. (more…)

Today, over 100 people gathered at the Masjid Ibrahim mosque in Northwest Las Vegas to make a statement of peace and unity. Amidst the recent wave of hate crimes and the Trump Administration’s continuing hostility to immigrant communities, Muslims and non-Muslims wanted to convey the message that immigrants of all faiths are still welcome in Nevada. Yesterday, the Senate Revenue and Economic Development Committee of the Nevada Legislature heard SB 147. This bill aims to offer up to a $2,500 tax credit to workers earning 85% or less of the median income. It’s not only a bill aimed at serving a critical need, but also a key part of the Democrats’ “Nevada Blueprint” agenda. (more…)

Yesterday, one house of the Nevada Legislature passed the first in what may be a series of marquis progressive bills. The Senate passed SJR 2 to ratify the ERA. And for this, the vote was bipartisan. The final vote was 13-8. (more…)
