Las Vegas Constituents to Senator Heller: “Where’s the Love?”

It’s quickly become a tradition of sorts. Progressive activists visit U.S. Senator Dean Heller’s (R) Las Vegas district office on #ResistTrumpTuesdays to demand he do more to stand up to President Donald Trump’s agenda. As Heller continues to approve more of Trump’s controversial Cabinet Nominees, activists made a special Valentine’s Day visit to ask him to show more love to his constituents (and less to Trump). Gold Butte Takes Center Stage Again in Mesquite

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hosted a public meeting in Mesquite last Thursday to provide local residents with information about the newly designated Gold Butte National Monument. A contingent of Bundy sympathizers tried to drown out dialogue. BLM representatives and Mesquite residents nonetheless engaged in that dialogue on how to move forward in protecting Gold Butte. In December, BuzzFeed reported allegations against hospital giant UHS of bed-filling at all costs.  The story sent the company’s stock plummeting. The odyssey-like stories of patients held involuntarily in psych wards hit home for Las Vegas resident Judy Hendrickson, who in 2012, fought to free her elderly father from a three-day hold in Desert Springs Hospital’s Geropsych unit.   (more…)

Opinion: Energy Efficiency Pays

Advocates for clean energy and energy efficiency applauded a unanimous decision by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Nevada on Wednesday to reconsider cuts to popular energy-efficient lighting rebates. Last year the PUC ended rebate programs for LED lighting, despite the fact that efficiency programs save consumers money, reduce energy bills, cut pollution and create jobs. (more…)
